The general principle

Most countries expect you to prove roughly $50–$150 USD per day of your trip, plus return flights and accommodation. Some require a fixed minimum balance regardless of trip length.

Typical minimums by destination

  • Schengen Area - €50–€120/day depending on country
  • United Kingdom - no fixed amount, but expect £1,500–£2,500 per visitor
  • United States - no minimum, but enough for trip + return
  • Canada - CAD $2,500 for short visits; more if travelling with family
  • Australia - AUD $5,000 typical for visitor visas
  • Japan - JPY ¥30,000–¥50,000 per day visible in statements

What counts as proof

  • Last 3–6 months of bank statements (stamped or downloaded as official PDFs)
  • Salary slips and tax returns
  • Investment, pension, or fixed deposit statements
  • Sponsor letter + sponsor's bank statements if someone is paying for you

Avoid showing one large sudden deposit. Officers look for steady, consistent balances built up over months.
